PRESENTATIONS AT THE MARCH 20, 2017, TOWN COUNCIL MEETING:


Canadian Garden Council - Award Presentation 
A representative on behalf of the Canadian Garden Council, in collaboration with the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association, presented members of the Town's Communities in Bloom Committee with the Garden Community Destination of the Year award and the ‘Canada 150 Garden Experience’ designation.

Regional Road 55 Update
A representative from Niagara Region's Public Works Department updated Council on Regional Road 55 improvements, which are scheduled to begin April 3, 2017.

 

Continuation of Council approved motions at the March 20, 2017, meeting:

Councillor Flynn - That Council purchase 176 Wellington Street for the purchase price of $3.5 million with a closing date of September 20, 2018. 

Councillor Disero - That the Director of Operations meet on site with the Village Residents' Association to discuss the possibilities of a left turn lane into the shopping plaza and report back to Committee of the Whole in May 2017. 

Councillor King - That due to Easter Monday falling on April 17, 2017, the Special Heritage Council meeting be rescheduled to Monday, April 24, 2017. 

Councillor Disero - That the Dock Area parking lot remain as a gravel lot for 2017 and a public consultation process take place to consider the finishing texture for the lot. 

Councillor Mazza - That staff report back to Council on next steps and options regarding the Simcoe Park water feature including costs, regional vetting, and approaches from other Ontario communities.

Councillor Flynn, in Councillor Bau-Coote's absence - That Town Council strongly endorse the importance of oral health and request the Premier of Ontario to include oral health as part of the government's primary care transformation initiatives and that the provincial government expand public oral health programs with prime consideration for low income adults and seniors.

Council approved the following at their March 20, 2017, meeting:

Zoning by-law amendments for 459 Line 1 Road, 15862 Niagara River Parkway, and 1512 Four Mile Creek Road.

A 30-day community wide walking challenge in June, organized by the Town's Active Transportation Committee and championed by Lord Mayor Darte.

An exemption to Noise Control By-law 4588-12, Schedule C - #4, to allow construction to take place until 9:00 p.m. during Niagara Region's reconstruction project of Niagara Stone Road (RR55) from April 3 to June 30, 2017. 

A tender from Demar Construction Inc. for Byron Street Storm and Sanitary Sewer construction from King Street to Wellington Street. 

A tender from Brennan Paving Limited for Queenston Road rehabilitation from Concession 7 Road to Concession 6 Road. 

The purchase and installation of TransitFare & Systems for AODA compliant next stop announcement and smart card fare management systems for NOTL Transit vehicles including auxiliary point-of-sale terminals. 

At the applicant's request, Council deferred planning applications for "Vintages of Four Mile Creek" located southwest of Line 9 Road and Four Mile Creek Road. 

Council approved the following motions at their March 20, 2017, meeting:

Councillor King - That Town Council requests Niagara Region to conduct the necessary warrant study to examine the installation of an appropriate crosswalk within the planned Regional Road 55 (Niagara Stone Road) roadway improvements for the Virgil corridor. 

Councillor Miele - That due to the increase in population and transient residents within the town, Council respectfully requests the Lord Mayor and Regional Councillor Gary Burroughs to petition Niagara Region to dedicate uniformed additional officers to the area of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Niagara Region is hosting a Public Information Centre regarding improvements to Regional Road 55 (Niagara Stone Road) from Concession 6 Road to Regional Road 100 (Four Mile Creek Road).

NPCA Conservation Award Ceremony 
On February 22, 2017, the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Communities in Bloom were recognized at the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) Conservation Award Ceremony for Watershed Restoration. Thank you to Town staff and the Communities in Bloom Committee for continuing to partner with community groups and organizations in numerous projects contributing to watershed restoration.


2016 Niagara Community Design Awards
Honourable mention was given to 17 Melrose Drive, Gibson Residence, for Architecture - Small Budget at Niagara Region's 2016 Niagara Community Design Awards. The awards took place on March 8, 2017, at Stone Mill Inn in St. Catharines.
