Public Tree Protection

Tree Fund

The Niagara-on-the-Lake Tree Fund has been established to assist with the greening of our community. This fund, administered by the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, provides an opportunity for anyone who wants to donate towards the planting of trees. For more information please read our Tree Fund Brochure, or visit the Town Tree page.

Witness Tree Program

The Witness Trees Program is a Communities in Bloom Committee initiative and includes the identification of trees with significant natural and cultural interest in the Town.

Documenting Niagara-on-the-Lake's Witness Trees:

  • A website has been created to tell the story of the Niagara-on-the-Lake community through trees (past, present, and future).
  • An interactive map connects the 5 villages that make up Niagara-on-the-Lake creating a visual trail of Witness Trees.
  • The Committee's goal is to engage the community in developing a database of trees, helping residents and visitors to view the Witness Trees in every season, either in person or virtually.
  • The Committee wishes to educate residents and visitors about the Niagara-on-the-Lake community’s colonial and Indigenous history, industry, farming, and the environment.
  • The Committee wants to connect with groups and individuals within the Niagara-on-the-Lake community from a tree’s perspective.

Role of Community in Blooms in this project:

  • While the Committee wants to document interesting information about the past, history can happen every day! The Witness Tree website is a way to document the story about our community and environment. The Community in Blooms Committee will work toward collecting these stories from the community through submissions to the Witness Tree website.
  • Verification of submissions to create a reference database to aid in the preservation of the trees and their stories for future generations.
  • Encourage participation by the community with initiatives like tree plantings and help to  identify more witness trees in our villages.

How can you get involved?

  • Everyone (i.e. individuals, schools, groups, etc.,) is welcome to participate in Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Witness Tree Program by nominating a tree on their own private property or public land.
  • Go to this link and you will find an informative video, scroll down to find an interactive map and the first 25 trees. The Committee hopes you go outside and explore our initial Witness Tree submissions.  Take a look around to see if you can find your own Witness Tree to submit,  one could be on your street or a place you love to walk! If you can't go outside, you can still explore online.
  • Contact us with comments, any updates you have on existing Witness Tree stories, or to provide reference material about a Tree.
