Niagara-on-the-Lake UNESCO Committee

UNESCO Committee

The UNESCO Committee has been working diligently to undertake research for an application to be listed on Parks Canada's Tentative List since late 2015. On August 8, 2016, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, announced the process to update Canada’s Tentative List for World Heritage Sites, an inventory of natural and cultural heritage properties with strong potential to be inscribed on the World Heritage List.

An application has been submitted to Parks Canada to be listed on Parks Canada's Tentative List. In order for a country to nominate a property as a potential World Heritage Site, it must first be placed on the country's Tentative List. The Tentative List is an inventory of properties that a country believes have good potential to meet one or more of the criteria for inscription on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
